dream BIG

Lately I’ve been sharing my lifelong dreams  and hopes with people. You’d actually be amazed at how negative people can be sometimes when it comes to someone else pursuing their dreams. One of my dreams is obviously to record an album and go on tour. I stopped sharing my dreams with some people a while back because some people weren’t really receptive to this particular dream. I mean, if I was a basketball player and wanted to be in the NBA, I think people would be more willing to listen to me talk about my hopes of making it become a reality. I came to terms with this when I had tried out for a show 2 years ago called “the one” on abc and it was a flop. I got to the last round and then I was cut, so I wouldn’t be on the show. The show was cancelled about a month after it aired. I remember telling everyone, “I’m trying out for this show!! Wish me luck!!” only to get responses that were very uncomfortable in a way. Almost like they didn’t want me to “make it”.  Unfortunately, singing is associated with “celebrity status”  and “fame” and no matter how much you try to persuade people that that’s not the reason why you are pursuing your  dream, they still don’t believe you, but I’ve come to terms with that by now. Anyway, I remember when I told people that I was getting far and passing rounds, they wanted to be around me all the time and “hang out” etc. It was kind of insulting in a way, but that came with the territory I guess. I remember the pain of telling everyone I didn’t make the show and everyone who was so interested in being my friend for those short months, slowly dissipated back to the way things always were.  The other day, I remember thinking…. “This is the dream and vision that God gave ME, and I should go for it! No matter who doesn’t believe in me, no matter who tries to tear it down,  and no matter how hard things may get.” I used to wish God had given me another gift, like painting or speaking, or acting, or academics, but I thought to myself, that’s being selfish and ungrateful! Peoples opinions should not hinder the outcome of our success! You see, we can’t get upset when we think our dreams fail! It should give us more drive to succeed and build more character from within. If Martin Luther King didn’t continue to dream  who knows what this world would be like. Our lives each individually impact the movement of this world. Fight for your dreams, Live life to it’s fullest, and don’t focus on the little things. Focus on the big picture, and at the very least, you’ll have a good story to tell.

One Response to “dream BIG”

  1. Devan!
I think its great that you dream big! If cutting a cd is something you want to do then go for it. I dont think people are mean on purpose, sometimes when others have big dreams it makes others feel like their dreams arent big enough and people can react the wrong way. Then of course there are some people that are just mean. I dont think you should stop talking about your dream….go for it! Ignore what other people say. You will always have negative people in your life but then you will always have people rooting for you. Its just life! I will buy your first CD someday :)
    You are great!
